Why Military Finance Leadership Matters

Most fractional CFOs come from Big 4 accounting firms or corporate finance roles. I come from managing $33 billion in combat operations and leading financial operations for America's largest nuclear missile wing. That's not just different experience—it's a completely different level of pressure, accountability, and results.

For 20 years, I managed billions when mistakes had consequences beyond the balance sheet. I led teams of 140 people through crisis, built budgets under fire, and turned around underperforming organizations in high-stakes environments. I started as an E-1 (lowest enlisted rank) and worked my way to Major and Squadron Commander—earning every promotion through results.

That's the discipline I bring to your business.

My Story: From Airman to CFO

Military Background

The Journey

I didn't start as an officer. I started as an E-1—the lowest enlisted rank in the Air Force—working on aircraft. I earned my way to E-5, then went to Officer Training School and commissioned as a Finance Officer.

Key assignments:

  • Middle East Special Operations Finance (2014): CFO for all special operations aircraft across the Middle East during ISIL operations. Managed complex, high-stakes financial operations in a combat-adjacent environment.
  • Peterson AFB Flight Commander: Led 21 personnel managing a $350M annual budget and $11B accounting database for 18 host and tenant units.
  • Malmstrom AFB Squadron Commander & CFO (2020-2022): Commanded 140 personnel and served as CFO for America's largest nuclear ICBM wing. Managed $125M budget with $372M economic impact. Led Zero Base Review saving $2.4M and defended $80M budget, securing $12M increase.

Awards & Recognition:

  • Defense Meritorious Service Medal
  • Meritorious Service Medal (3x)
  • Joint Service Commendation Medal
  • Multiple Company Grade Officer of the Year awards
  • Sijan Award nominee (Air Force's highest honor for junior officers)

After retiring in 2022, I transitioned to corporate finance—serving as CFO for a PE-backed MSP (managed 2 acquisitions, drove 50% growth) and Director of Finance & Business Analytics for a Vista-backed SaaS company (built unified data lake with AI, saved $159K in procurement, enabled largest single customer sale).

Now I bring that same level of discipline to growing businesses. No corporate bureaucracy. Just results.

How I Can Help You

Acquisitions & M&A

Led multiple acquisitions during Air Force career and PE-backed MSP. I know due diligence, integration, and value creation—not just in theory, but from doing it in high-pressure environments where mistakes are costly. Call Today: (616) 881-6777

CFO Transitions & Crisis Management

Taken over underperforming finance operations multiple times—both in military and corporate settings. I know how to step in, assess quickly, fix what's broken, and build systems that last. If you're navigating founder transition, PE ownership change, or leadership crisis, I've been there.

Zero-Based Budgeting & Cost Optimization

Led Zero Base Review for entire nuclear missile wing—saved $2.4M, defended $80M budget, secured $12M increase. This isn't about cutting costs blindly—it's about understanding what drives value and reallocating resources strategically.

FP&A, Forecasting & Strategic Planning

Built budgets and forecasts at every scale—from squadron-level to wing-level ($720M) to corporate environments. I use tools like NetSuite, Sage, Salesforce, PowerBI, and advanced analytics (Python, SQL, Monte Carlo simulations) to deliver insights that drive decisions.

Audit, Compliance & Risk Management

Performed first combat zone audit in 5 years (Iraq). Resolved audit deficiencies, established internal controls, aligned operations to regulatory requirements. Risk management isn't theoretical when you're managing $33B in a hostile environment.

What Makes Me Different

1. Combat-Tested Decision Making
Most CFOs have never made financial decisions under physical threat. I managed $33B+ in the Middle East during combat operations. Quarterly pressure doesn't rattle me.

2. Proven Leadership at Scale
Led teams of 140+ people, turned around underperforming organizations, earned awards at every level. I don't just manage numbers—I lead people through change.

3. Built Systems Under Fire
Created financial processes that worked in chaotic, high-stakes environments. If your business feels chaotic, I've worked in worse and delivered results.

4. Ground-Up Experience
Started as E-1 (lowest rank) and worked my way to Major and Squadron Commander. I know what it's like to work your way up—and how to build organizations where talent thrives.

5. No Corporate Bureaucracy
I'm not coming from a Big 4 firm with layers of process. I'm a practitioner who knows how to get things done efficiently.

Bottom Line: You're not just hiring a fractional CFO. You're hiring someone who's led through crisis, managed billions under pressure, and built financial operations that work when it matters most.
